Much has been written about AI’s impact on work, society, and humanity. Some envision dystopian futures, while others foresee technology enhancing human capabilities. The Economic Forum projects AI will eliminate 92 million jobs but create 170 million new ones by 2030. In the midst of these discussions, it’s vital to ask: what makes us uniquely human as AI advances?  Amid rapid technological progress, I believe we risk losing sight of our distinctly human untouchable powers; qualities that set us apart from machines. They are our soul, spirit, mind, feelings (like love), hope and faith.

However before I dig deeper into this, I thought I’d share a quote I came across from the book by Dan Brown, The Secret of Secrets. “The personal attributes that made us who we are, our hopes, fears, dreams, memories, were nothing more than chemical compounds suspended by electrical charges in our brains.”  Interesting that everything going on in our brain is brought down to chemicals and electrical charges.

Now coming back to the six human untouchable powers that include our soul, spirit, mind, feelings in particular love, hope, and faith in Webster you find the following definitions:

However before I dig deeper into this, I thought I’d share a quote I came across from the book by Dan Brown, The Secret of Secrets. “The personal attributes that made us who we are, our hopes, fears, dreams, memories, were nothing more than chemical compounds suspended by electrical charges in our brains.”  Interesting that everything going on in our brain is brought down to chemicals and electrical charges.

Now coming back to the six human untouchable powers that include our soul, spirit, mind, feelings in particular love, hope, and faith in Webster you find the following definitions:

1. Soul as the immaterial essence, animating principle, or actuating cause of an individual life. As the spiritual principle embodied in human beings, all rational and spiritual beings, or the universe. For those that have a religious belief, most tend to believe we all have a soul.

2. Spirit as an animating or vital principle held to give life to physical organisms. As the immaterial intelligent or sentient part of a person. This is also something believed by those that are religious.

3. Mind is considered the element or complex elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons. It is the conscious mental events and capabilities in an organism. Neuroscientists research the power of the physical brain, but I have not found many writings or discussions on the physical aspects of the mind.

4. Feelings such Anger, Hate, Fear, and Love:  Picking one as an example, I pick Love that is defined as strong affection for another arising out of kinship or personal ties. As an attraction based on sexual desire, affection, and tenderness felt by lovers. It is more of a feeling between two humans. This can usually be perceived by the population at large when two people seem to be in love. But it is not something with physical characteristics that we can all point to.

5. Hope is defined as something to cherish a desire with. To want something to happen or be true.  It is basically someone wishing or expecting that something will work out or come to be the way they want it to work out.

6. Faith is defined as a belief and trust in and loyalty to God. To have a firm belief in something for which there is no proof. Merriam-Webster Dictionary. For anyone that believes in God or a superior being to us as humans, and to believe they will take care of.

We cannot touch, smell, taste, see, or hear any of these. But we can relate to all of them. As of now, AI does not seem to have a soul, spirit, mind, feelings like love, hope, or faith.

When it comes to someone’s soul, it is not something we can see. As the definition says, it’s an immaterial essence and animating principle. Most, especially religious or faith based individuals tend to believe we have a soul. Even though, no one can point to something that we can all look at and agree that what we are looking at is a soul.

When it comes to spirit, the definition highlights an immaterial intelligence or sentient part of a person. There are those that have been described as having a joyful spirit. This is meant to describe someone who seems happy, joyful, and pleasant. But again, no one can point to someone’s spirit that we can all see.

Our brain is a magnificent specimen of a human organ. However the mind is something we cannot physically hold. We cannot see, hear, feel, smell, or touch the mind. It is seen as the complex elements in an individual that feels, perceives, thinks, wills, and especially reasons.

Within the mind neuroscientists we have found that we different levels of consciousness. We have our conscious self, which are things we actively pay attention to. The unconscious, where we usually experience our unconscious biases, or may not realize why we chose a particular action or feel about someone the way we do. The last is the subconscious, which is usually a portion of our hidden mind. Some say our brain purposely places some past negative experiences deep down within our subconscious to protect us from those memories. But again none of these have physical components that can be touched.

When it comes to feelings in particular love we can perceive when we believe two people are in love. And when we perceive love, we may do so differently. As it is defined to be related to sexual desire, affection, and tenderness felt by lovers Others may demonstrate behaviors that we believe is an example of love, such as affection. But again it is not something we can smell, taste, touch, or hear. We can perceive it by how two individuals may describe their lover, and actually see some of the behaviors that society has labeled as signs of love.

Hope is something that humans yearn for. That whatever they want or strive for will work out. It is a belief and one that most scientist might say are not based on logic. As for faith, this is primarily religious based. And while there are those that do not believe in God, for those that do, part of believing in God, is that faith is fundamental. Something closely related to hope, but those of religious persuasion might say is more powerful and omnipotent.

So there you have it. These six human untouchable powers that we as humans have and yet cannot physically point to. Each one of them by themselves are powerful enough to have created human accomplishments, wars, deaths, and provided the ultimate challenges over the history of humanity in pursuit of them.  Humans in spite of ours flaws have shown how resilient, creative, innovative, and determined we can be when presented with challenges and opportunities.

Now the question to consider is if and how AI will replicate these four human untouchable powers or at least human uniqueness? If so, what will it mean for AI, humanity, the future of society and the world?  What are your thoughts? Does this even matter? If not, why not? If so, why and how?

In the growing AI era, we will need HI-human intelligence. And yes, those 6 human untouchable powers.
